While Charles Rennie Mackintosh was studying at the Glasgow School of Art he was introduced to two young English sisters of Scottish descent - Frances and Margaret Macdonald. In 1900 Margaret Macdonald and Mackintosh got married and they continued to work together, both in Scotland and abroad. The daughters of an English father and Scottish mother, the Macdonald sisters settled in Glasgow. The meeting between Margaret and Charles was to change their lives forever. Along with his friend Herbie MacNair, they formed an alliance with the Macdonald sisters and became known as the 'Glasgow Four'. Charles and Margaret found success in competitions in Germany and at exhibitions in Vienna and Turin. Together they designed the Wamdorfer Music Salon in Vienna and the Exhibition Room in Moscow. Margaret Macdonald's contribution to Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work should never be underestimated. The two artistic and romantic unions created the core of what would become known as the 'Glasgow Style'. The four shared a close artistic relationship.
